A Research Engineer is needed for a world leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives in the Mossville, IL area. This position is responsible for designing, testing, and analyzing mechanical products and systems, diagnosing equipment issues, and collaborating with various teams to ensure project feasibility and performance, requiring strong technical and communication skills in a lab and office environment.

responsibilities:

  • Lead engine test execution as a test engineer, including structural (MER - Mounted Equipment Resonance, Durability) and non-structural tests (e.g., lube system performance, engine piston and liner tests).

  • Collaborate with upstream, peer, and downstream teams on test execution.

Typical Task Breakdown:

  • Pretest: collect test requirements and gauge maps.

  • Work with lab team on test execution and data acquisition using systems like eDAQ, LMS.

  • Perform test data analysis.

  • Structural tests: modal testing, vibration severity assessment, weld/bolted joint analysis, parent material fatigue analysis.

  • Non-structural tests: engine system performance analysis (temperature, pressure, flow, vibration, wear/endurance).

  • Communicate test results and recommendations to internal customers (design engineers and engine system validation leads).

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • 3-5 years of engineering experience (including internships and hands-on work).

  • Preferred: Master's degree in engineering.

Technical Skills (Required):

  • Engine test experience.

  • Knowledge of internal combustion engines, structural/fatigue knowledge (vibration/durability), test instrumentation, data processing.

  • Initiative and understanding of customer needs and product applications.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

Technical Skills (Plus):

  • Engine simulation or design experience.
